Sun Records – Memphis TN

The Memphis based Sun Records is known as the birthplace of many musical legends, in the genres of Rockability and Rythum & Blues. Sam Phillips the owner of Sun studios is credited for discovering Bluesmen such as Howlin’ Wolf, Little Milton, and B.B. King. He is also known for discovering Rockability artist such as Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. Early on Phillips focused on recording Rhythum & Blues.

As many of his early blues discoveries became more popular and more opportunities came available to them, artist such as Howlin Wolf and B.B. King moved on to other record labels. This created a void at Sun records. Phillips then changed his focus from Blues to Rockability. Following the change to Rockability and with the sucess of Elvis Presley, Sun Records had all the creditibility it needed. As time went on this label would attract a variety of performs from diffrent walks of life.

In 1986 Sam Phillips was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Later in 1998 Phillips was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. The orgional Union Avenue location  was made a historic landmark the day following Phillips death on July 30, 2003. Sun Records is one of the greatest contributors to the Rock and Roll sound. Thanks to Phillips’s ear for talant and the contribution of various musical artist, the sound of music  was enhanced, refined and changed forever.
