Travel in San Andres, Colombia

Located on the outer edge of the Caribbean is San Andres, Colombia. This is the main island of a two island groups located 480 miles northwest of Columbia and 140 miles from Nicaragua. This island is  roughly seven  miles long and two miles wide, and its population was roughly 60,000 in 2006. It’s capital San Andrés is located on the Northern part of the island. San Andres’ main airport  Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International serves the city of San Andres, San Luis, the near by Providencia Island, and much of the local  tourism for Central American. This airport is the sixth busiest airport in Colombia with over 800,000 passengers a year.  However, many passengers fly in from the continental Columbia, because of poor international direct service.

San Andres has some of the best diving and snorkeling in the Caribbean and is still not a main stream  tourist attraction. The near by island of Providencia has some of the best diving in the Caribbean, and Santa Catalina  has one of the longest coral reefs in the world, complete with a variety of marine life and colored coral reefs.

Visitors to this island can expect to enjoy horseback riding, parasailing, wind surfing, white sandy beaches and swimming in clear blue waters. Also expect an exciting night life, with a full array of good  accommodations,  including duty-free shopping. From San Andres’ cuisine to the language there, visitors can expect  a varied multi-cultural experience. Although Spanish is the official language there, many speak English too.  If this sounds like your kinda place to visit, plan your trip today.
